The Leos Public Relations Club hosted guest speaker Mary Ann Pearson Wednesday in the Arts and Communications Building to discuss “7 Steps to Success in PR.”

Pearson is the president of the Inland Empire Chapter for Public Relations Society of America and an associate professor of public relations at Cal Baptist University.

“I am a person who has many passions,” Pearson said. “My three main passions are education, journalism and public relations.”

Pearson also serves as a mentor to many students and helps those who reach out to her build their resumes through internships.

“You need to prove yourself as an intern,” Pearson said. “It doesn’t mean they’ll hire you, but if you can leave with a really good letter of recommendation, that’s incredible.”

The seven steps Pearson discussed included research planning implementation and evaluation, internships, working on personal branding, getting published through freelancing, completing a master’s degree or accreditation program, and applying, interviewing and landing the job.

“These opportunities are beneficial to us because it brings you a professional insight into the career you’re going into,” said Yareiry Pineda, junior communications major and treasurer of the Leos PR Club. “There wasn’t really anything for PR on campus and this is a great way to expose it as an emphasis.”

Pearson explained that when a student earns a master’s degree, each course they take will be focused on that particular subject. This allows the students to gain a competitive edge while applying for jobs.

“Now PR has hit such a level that it has master’s degrees because there’s a need,” she said. “It’s competitive.”

Pearson is also the program director for the master of arts in public relations program at Cal Baptist. The accelerated program provides 11 courses, which allows a student to finish their degree within one year.

“If you have a really good job offer and that’s what you want to do, stay with that job,” Pearson said. “However if you feel like you haven’t had that opportunity yet and its just a dead end job, its really easy to get stuck there, so get a master’s.”

She ensured that the students understood there is a unique path for them all, and they have to do what feels right for them.

“What you learn in a classroom is beneficial but an event like this prepares you for interviews and what to expect,” said junior communications major Stephanie Jerome. “We’re going to have a big panel at the end of April so this is just a sneak peak of what our club has to offer.”
